Senior year is a whirlwind—the last first day, the final game under the Friday night lights, and the bittersweet excitement of college acceptance letters. And right in the middle of it all? Senior portraits. But not just any portraits—the kind that capture your teen’s personality, confidence, and this once-in-a-lifetime milestone in a way that makes you tear up (in the best way possible!).
As a senior photographer with 21 years of experience serving Mosinee, Wausau, Stevens Point, and all of Central Wisconsin, I’ve seen it all—rushed sessions, outfit regrets, and missed opportunities. If you want stunning, timeless senior photos without the stress, here are six mistakes to avoid.
Mistake #1: Waiting Too Long to Book the Session
Senior year flies by, and before you know it, you’re scrambling to find a photographer with availability. The best photographers (the ones who take care of all the details for you) book months in advance. If you wait until the last minute, you might have to settle for a rushed experience that doesn’t match your vision.
How to Avoid It: The best time to book? Junior year or early senior year. That way, you get the perfect time of year, the best locations, and a seamless, stress-free experience. My schedule fills fast—so don’t wait!
Mistake #2: Choosing the Wrong Photographer
Not all photographers are created equal. Some take quick snapshots and hand you a USB. Others (like me!) create a full-service, luxury experience—guiding you through outfits, locations, posing, and delivering high-end printed portraits you’ll cherish forever.
How to Avoid It: Look for a photographer who understands the high-end, full-service experience you want. If you value wall art, albums, and stunning keepsakes, choose someone who specializes in printing, not just digital files.

Mistake #3: Not Planning Outfits Strategically
You want your senior’s portraits to look polished and cohesive—not like a random collection of outfits that don’t match. The wrong outfit choices (clashing colors, crazy patterns, or just “meh” clothing) can make a big difference in the final images. However, don’t let this scare you! If your senior has a unique style that defines their personality, you should definitely bring those special outfits. You shouldn’t have to purchase a whole new wardrobe.
How to Avoid It: Plan outfits that are timeless, flattering, and coordinate with your home decor (because yes, these will be on your walls!) I help my clients choose colors, textures, and styles that elevate their portraits and make their senior portraits look amazing. And don’t forget to let your senior bring their favorite outfits that really show off their personality and fashion sense.
Mistake #4: Ignoring Location & Lighting Considerations
Not every location is picture-perfect, and lighting plays a HUGE role in how your photos turn out. A bad location or poor lighting can make even the best outfits and poses fall flat.
How to Avoid It: Trust your photographer! I know the best hidden gem locations in Wausau, Mosinee, Stevens Point, and all over Central Wisconsin to get that golden-hour glow and perfect backdrop for your senior’s style.

Mistake #5: Hiring a Photographer Who Doesn’t Offer a Consultation
A great senior portrait experience starts long before the first click of the camera. If your photographer doesn’t take the time to get to know your senior’s personality, your vision, or your budget, you may end up with a session that doesn’t meet your expectations.
How to Avoid It: I offer a complimentary consultation, either in person or over the phone, to make sure we’re the right fit! This helps us go over all the important details—style preferences, location ideas, and investment options. Plus, I offer payment plans to make the experience more accessible. And don’t worry about gift prints—I include them with every session, so you’ll have beautiful prints ready to share with family!
Another perk? My all-inclusive sessions allow for unlimited locations and outfit changes, tailored specifically to your senior’s style. Session can take up to 3 hours or so with multiple outfit changes if you wish. Plus, social media files are included with many of our products, so you’ll have both stunning prints and images to share online.
Mistake #6: Skipping Professional Printing & Display Planning
The biggest mistake I see? Letting gorgeous senior portraits sit on a hard drive. Digital files are great for sharing, but they don’t give you that emotional, WOW-factor like seeing your child’s senior portrait beautifully displayed in your home.
How to Avoid It: Work with a photographer who specializes in archival quality prints, albums, and custom wall art. When you book with me, I help you design the perfect display so your senior’s portraits are showcased exactly how they deserve to be.

Final Thoughts
Senior year is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and your senior’s portraits should capture every bit of it—beautifully, stress-free, and with a personalized touch that you won’t forget. Avoid these common mistakes, and you’ll end up with stunning, high-end portraits that will make you smile every time you walk by them.
